Reading is cool!
The reading level decreases. We need to improve the technical skills of students, I hear from all sides. I certainly agree with this, but I still think that we can guarantee lasting reading skills only by improving the reading experience. In other words: by making reading cool (or by showing children that this is cool, reading was of course always cool). That opinion is grown out of experience. I recently was in high school and I was given a few reading tasks every year. The government may think that they ensure that students read at least a few books every school year, but nothing is less true. Every time I heard from many fellow students that they had not read the book at all, just consulted scholieren.com and quickly written a text. I do not think that this is the result that the government wants, and yet it is the result that is achieved. The only way to ensure that the students actually read is to make reading a pleasant experience. And actual reading is necessary. Because perhaps these high school students can read fast enough, but to improve in reading comprehension, reading is also highly necessary at teen age. Because books for adults do not connect directly to children’s books. Improving reading skills (by means of having to) in primary school children (which you can ‘force’ more easily) is an option, but to allow them to continue reading and ultimately to turn adults with sufficient understanding of literature and difficult texts to society (and that is what the ultimate goal is), the reading experience remains one of the most important domains that I believe we should focus on.

You first have to read a book and then you get questions and assignments that have to do with your book, you then earn points and with those points you can play a super fun virtual reality/other game in the library.
School:
Primary school:
- Show videos of famous children’s heroes / idols who talk about their reading experiences
- Visit the library
- Start viewing interactive plays about books (children can show their knowledge)
- Make a play in class yourself about the possible outcome, stir up your imagination
- Supervise children who have difficulty reading and continue to give positive feedback, make nice booklets available adapted to their reading level without being too childish
High school:
- Attractive book finder with specific topic distribution
- Enthusiastic subject teacher who talks passionately about literature and books
- Give tasks where reading a book is a major added value
o Such as connecting with current events related to topic
o Competition “the best book”:
choose your own book, make a play, make promotional items, argue “why best book”, explain implications, what is the best sentence?

absolute winner may make film, together with professional team
o Reading interesting literature related to a certain subject with the possibility of coming together to discuss (possibly also with specialists), what influence does the book have on this subject?, maybe I want to do something with it later?, a bonus question on the exam
o The class collects as many reading points as possible by telling the class about a recently read book, if enough: 1 lesson at the end of the year where the students can decide what they do during that lesson
- Discussion platform on Smartschool with questions, concerns, sharing nice links or videos about book
- Organize events: going for free with the school to a book fair for meetings with writers, interactive activities
- Adapting a book fair to young people, creating a game in which series are linked to books, interesting facts are communicated, writing competitions are announced and celebrated

België: leesniveau gaat achteruit
Lezen is cool!
Het leesniveau gaat achteruit. We moeten de technische vaardigheid van leerlingen bijspijkeren, hoor ik van alle kanten. Hier ben ik het zeker mee eens, maar ik denk toch dat we een blijvende leesvaardigheid enkel kunnen garanderen door de leeservaring te verbeteren. Met andere woorden: door lezen cool te maken (of kinderen te laten zien dat dit cool is, lezen was natuurlijk altijd al cool). Deze mening is uit ervaring gegroeid. Pas geleden zat ik namelijk nog in het middelbaar en kreeg ik enkele leestaken per jaar voorgeschoteld. De overheid denkt misschien dat ze er zo voor zorgen dat leerlingen tenminste enkele boeken per schooljaar lezen, maar niks is minder waar. Elke keer hoorde ik van vele medeleerlingen dat ze het boek helemaal niet hadden gelezen, gewoon scholieren.com geraadpleegd en een tekstje uit hun pen geflanst. Ik denk niet dat dit het resultaat is dat de overheid wil bekomen, en toch is dit het resultaat dat bekomen wordt. De enige manier om ervoor te zorgen dat de leerlingen wel echt lezen, is van lezen een fijne ervaring maken. En echt lezen, is nodig. Want misschien kunnen deze middelbare scholieren wel snel genoeg lezen, maar om te verbeteren in begrijpend lezen, is ook op tienerleeftijd lezen hoogst noodzakelijk. Want boeken voor volwassenen sluiten niet direct aan op kinderboeken. De leesvaardigheid (door middel van moeten) verbeteren bij lagere school kinderen (die je nog gemakkelijker kunt ‘dwingen’) is een optie, maar om hen blijvend te laten lezen en uiteindelijk volwassenen met voldoende begrip in literatuur en moeilijke teksten aan de samenleving af te leveren (en dat is toch wat het uiteindelijke doel is), blijft de leeservaring één van de belangrijkste domeinen waar we volgens mij op moeten inzetten.

Je moet eerst een boek lezen en dan krijg je vragen en opdrachtjes die met je boek te maken hebben, je verdient dan punten en met die punten kan je een superleuk virtual reality/ander spel in de bib spelen .

Lagere school:
- Filmpjes tonen van bekende kinderhelden/idolen die praten over hun leeservaringen
- Bib bezoeken
- Interactieve toneelstukken over boeken gaan bekijken (kinderen kunnen hun kennis tonen)
- Zelf toneelstukje maken in de klas over mogelijke afloop, fantasie aanwakkeren
- Kindjes die het moeilijk hebben met lezen begeleiden en blijven geven van positieve feedback, leuke boekjes ter beschikking stellen aangepast aan hun leesniveau zonder dat het te kinderachtig is
Middelbare school:
- Aantrekkelijke boekenzoeker met specifieke onderwerpsverdeling
- Enthousiaste vakleerkracht die gepassioneerd over literatuur en boeken an sich vertelt
- Taken geven waarbij lezen van boek een grote meerwaarde is
- Zoals verbinden met actuele gebeurtenissen rond onderwerp
- Wedstrijd ‘het beste boek’:
zelf boek kiezen, toneelstuk maken, promotieartikelen maken, betoog ‘waarom beste boek’, implicaties uitleggen, wat is de beste zin?

absolute winnaar mag film maken, samen met professionele ploeg - Interessante literatuur die te maken heeft met een bepaald vak laten lezen met mogelijkheid tot samenkomen om te bespreken en eventueel met specialisten te discussiëren, welke invloed op dit vakdomein?, wil ik hier later misschien iets mee doen?, op het examen bonusvraag
- Als klas zo veel mogelijk leespunten verzamelen door aan de klas te vertellen over een pas gelezen boek, als genoeg: 1 les op het einde van het jaar waarin leerlingen zelf invulling mogen bepalen
- Discussieplatform op smartschool met vragen, bedenkingen, leuke links of filmpjes over boek delen
- Evenementen organiseren: als school gratis naar boekenbeurs voor ontmoetingen met schrijvers, interactieve bezigheden
- Boekenbeurs aanpassen aan jongeren, spel maken waarin series aan boeken worden gekoppeld, interessante feiten worden meegedeeld, schrijfwedstrijden worden aangekondigd en gevierd
