The power of critical thinking

Recently I have been thinking about being critical. From my own experience I notice that some people take things too quickly without evaluating them for truthfulness and the presence of nuance.

I have also recently heard several pleas to make this an (more) important value. In a society where we are constantly bombarded with information, at school and in the newspaper, but also through advertising and social media, this is necessary. This necessity is permanent and is likely to increase (increase in information channels, the changing nature of society, fake news, …).

But is information supposed to be correct? Can’t we blindly trust most sources?
The answer is no. The information is not always correct, and this is more often the case than we think. Not only when we see advertisements (where techniques are used that ensure that incorrect or exaggerated information unknowingly influences us and so that vigilance is certainly required), but also when reading a scientific journal, for example. Even then, there may be errors in it or the information can be presented in such a way that many draw the wrong conclusions. So being critical is the message.

I believe that education can play a key role in upgrading, normalizing and automating critical thinking. So that children and young people in their daily lives are able to make better decisions and whether or not to follow certain visions. So that young people not only think about their school subjects, but also about society and all its sub-aspects in a nuanced and thoughtful way. We have to remember that they are the voters and leaders of the future.

But critical thinking is also a must when it comes to practicing the profession that their studies prepare for. Science, established values and developments in society are constantly changing. Knowledge is important to create a basic framework from which the practitioner of a certain (professional) discipline can depart, I have no doubt about that. This is also important for terminology and structuring.

But the changing nature of society forces us to continue learning during our career. And because, as I said, not all information provided through literature, media, etc. is correct, it is very important that people can evaluate and value these sources and facts themselves. Making pupils and students competent in this area therefore has several advantages. It means that if we want to move forward and organize society in the best possible way, we have no other choice than to focus on this.

The human condition of searching for meaning II

More structured update of “The human condition of searching for meaning”.

Many of us (we, human) feel that there is “something”. Life must have meaning, because otherwise we would not have that meaning-seeking attitude.

On the one hand: coincidence in humans

But other life forms do not have this experience / feeling (probably; because they don’t have a consciousness or another existential instrument of thought). Now, you can argue that these are “lower” forms of life. Yet, this doesn’t seem to me to be a good argument because it could very well be that if there were ‘higher’ forms of life (which may have a consciousness, or not because they have ‘outgrown’ this / have something else in place), these would not share this feeling with humans. In addition, it is not necessary true that we have a more accurate view / a more correct “way of thinking” about existence than “lower” forms of life because we are “more intelligent”. If we are honest, we have to admit that it also goes far beyond us and we have to remember that intelligence remains a human construct.

The fact that almost everyone has a sense that there must be a meaning, is therefore incorrect. Unless “everyone” is understood as only humans, but considering ourselves as the only point of reference would be, as I have already shown, very narcissistic and haughty. The world doesn’t exist for us. Thus it is not because we human (with our subjective vision, with our specific sensory perception of reality) think that there is meaning, that it is a proof that it must be / is. Although of course it is possible that animals, without our knowledge, have that feeling in some way and that “higher” life forms would have it, but it is far from certain. In addition, “life has a meaning” remains a possibility anyway (also if other living creatures don’t have the feeling), as there are so many other options. We do not have proof to the contrary either.

On the other hand: interpretation of meaning of life

When we look for the meaning of life and feel “something”, many people call it “God”. We then make a specific representation of this, one person more detailed than the other. It is important to know that God has grown historically. Many years ago He entered our culture and today God is still a widely supported cause and meaning for our existence. It is therefore at least in part a cultural construct, although that does not exclude the possibility that it can be based on truth. But we don’t know for sure that this is the pure truth. The existence may just as well be an illusion of a brain in a barrel full of water, and the fact that we think this is madness has to do (certainly in part) with the fact that this vision is not in our culture, so we aren’t grew up / brought up with this idea. However, I would like to emphasize again that the possibility of a “God” implies that we cannot exclude His existence.

In the end, I think we end up in a situation where doubt and uncertainty are paramount. Both the question about the presence or absence of meaning, and the question about the existence or absence of God, I (and I think many others) cannot answer unambiguously and with certainty.
I especially wanted to show that we, as humans, are biased from our specific culture and our specific reality perspective. I therefore think that being critical is very important, at the same time I am convinced that believing is something that we should never, ever give up.

Because life has so much more to offer

The need for a beautiful and inspiring vision of life is current and yet of all times. To where our historical sources reach, we see the philosophical attitude of mankind appearing in all kinds of different objects and writings. I also think philosophy is extremely interesting because it enables us to think about what we see but also about what we don’t see, about what we know for sure but also what we doubt about. Philosophy encompasses everything that is derived from existence, including imaginary but vivid thoughts that can only be formed in the mind. The enclosing existence itself is also not excluded. The philosophical answers evolve over time, they take on a new nature, but the enthusiastic and truth-seeking approach remains. Finally, all of this also has a place in the “real” world, in real activities and problems. In other words: philosophy changes and lets change.

Today we are at a tipping point. The ways of thinking among leading figures seem to consist of extremes. Something has to change, and philosophy would not be philosophy if he could not help us with this. A challenging starting point to find an answer to what way of thinking we should use and therefore what our world should look like, is to pretend that we are on a space journey. Suppose we meet extraterrestrial life many light years away from the Earth and they ask us to describe our earthly existence. What do we want to be able to tell about our world? We must remember that these extraterrestrial beings will objectively look at our life on earth, and the things that we take for granted from our position, they may find very strange or unfair. Let us therefore “prepare” and look at the world objectively to discover what could be improved. Let’s create a fair and beautiful world together. Then we are immediately prepared for the future.

I would like to tell about a world where all people are respected. A world where the burning out of racism is a priority. A world in which no difference is made on the basis of special and meaningful religion, skin color on the spectrum from light to dark, gender with regard to one’s own identity and many other characteristics that guarantee the uniqueness and individuality of each person. I think we can achieve this through an extremely moral way of thinking, a way of thinking that gets as many children as possible into the cradle and that is strengthened at school. Confrontations with multiculturalism occur already in childhood and stimulate connectedness. Because neophobia exists and is human, but as long as we realize this and correct it, it doesn’t have to be a problem. Adults must set an example, something that unfortunately is not always the case today. It is important to know that we not only cán do this, but that we múst do this. We live in an increasingly global world, a world in which exclusion often has major consequences for the excluded but also for the exclusors when the ball bounces back. We have no other choice, only this is how we reach the future.

We must look at the earth as our own child. Commit to a sustainable planet and encourage others to do so. See the urgency. This is a crisis that is much greater than any of us. A problem whose strongest consequences only show itself when it is already too late. But it’s not because we can’t see it that we can’t do something about it. We owe it to the earth, to future generations, and to the other animals and plants that live on this planet. I wish my grandchildren can grow up without immense climate problems, and I am convinced that you also wish that for your grandchildren.

When I dream about my ideal life in a beautiful world at night, I see a world where there is a completely different vision of life. Yet my vision of a good life is not extreme or shocking. I dream about people who know that life is finite and money material. All too often in today’s world I see people who are so concerned with money and success that they forget the world. They no longer see the essential elements of existence. Imagine a busy businessman or woman who works every day from early in the morning until late at night. Money will probably not be a problem for this person, but to what extent do the large doses of stress terrorize his physical and mental health? When will he find time for family, friends and a conscious walk in nature? Looking consciously at the world and nature seems to be a thing of the past in an era in which we work or take lessons indoors and in which technology has gained the upper hand. We wonder about space, but how many people have ever really looked at the earth? These (often neglected) aspects are, in my opinion, necessities that will ultimately contribute to the satisfaction and serenity that few people are given today. The obtained states of mind, in turn, contribute to a more tolerant world with less racism and war.

That there are many things that money cannot provide, I realized with unprecedented purity when I organized activities for the children in a refugee reception center. A child’s smile creates a wave of warmth on which you can surf for a long time afterwards to a feeling of happiness. This dual result, in which two people experience a small but beautiful moment, can be achieved with no money in the world. Success is also not profound enough to illuminate the darkest place in your heart. After you die, people will mainly think back to who you were as a person, the warmth you spread and the support you gave.

Keep in mind that inventing excuses for participating in a culture of unnecessary activities will not help you. Remember that finitude and mortality force us not to waste time on things that don’t matter, that they force us to surrender to what is really important. With the hypothetical depiction of our immense universe in mind, these human qualities and the size of the universe only really come to my mind. When I look at the stars, I see the greatness of everything and I realize that even a pin in a haystack is many times more visible and influential than a human in the universe. That’s why we can only do one thing: live with a loving and big L.

As leading and important people in our society to help normalize this vision, for example through education that focuses more on lessons about life (in our society) instead of just focusing on lessons that focus on performance, more people will dare to change off course, more people will dare to live a truly satisfying life with tolerance as a free incidental that means much more than the word incidental suggests.

This vision can therefore be a guide through the jungle of life, but is not intended as absolute truth. This should above all encourage a society in which each individual can decide for himself what makes his life meaningful and what he likes to do without being left with guilt. Each individual can make and monitor his own balance (for example between performance at work and being together with or committed to others). In this way we can get rid of the ridiculous contradiction between being existentially ignorant, through which ‘obligation’ loses his right to exist, ánd yet be pushed in fixed directions. In this way people can choose freely and create their own values, norms and goals (although basic values must be determined collectively so that people with bad intentions are not given free rein). When people have the freedom to complement their whole of values at will, they will experience an extremely satisfying sense in their pursuits that can be seen as the expression of these values. The core of this beautiful society will then consist of personal meaning with unique creations, satisfaction and solidarity between people and people and nature as a result.

Characteristics and life lessons in the books of Haruki Murakami

  • Accessible style, complex themes that make you think
  • Great imagination

Can those absurd stories tell us something about real life?

Yes, message:

Letting go that you have to know exactly who you are, that you must and can always have an overview and control over your life, that there must always be and can be stability in your life.

  1. Characters also first seem to have a stable image of who they are, seem to be in control of everything BUT then something happens and they discover that they actually do not know it all and can’t control it all
  2. Gap between then and now
  3. Who did we think we were and how did we think life was and what do we think now

How do they deal with this? Three options:

  • Denial: stubbornly trying to stick to the old
  • Rebirth: phase to become a new person
  • Acceptance: learn to live with split (before-after), learn to accept that stability is not necessary throughout life, that change is okay

= option that finally ends up with characters

Only then we can allow new things, only then can we do things or allow people into our lives that do not strengthen but change the image we have of ourselves.

Call me by your name … and I call you by mine

I recently watched a movie that was released two years ago and has received many great reviews. I had been planning to watch ‘Call me by your name’ for a while, and a few days ago it finally happened.

I thought it was a beautiful film in the purest sense of the word. A movie that really touched me, like no other movie did. When I read the description, I thought the main topic was “homosexuality.”  Although there is of course nothing wrong with that, I found it very innovative and enlarging that the main subject turned out to be ‘love’. A love that is unconditional and beautiful. It makes you realize that love is pure and has nothing to do with gender.  That love can shake you and leave you with grief and gratitude at the same time.

I am convinced that we must cherish this as human. If someone is lucky enough to meet someone he or she loves that much, we should be happy for that person. Whether it is a male-male, male-female or female-female relationship. The last thing we have to do is, often because of our own discomfort about homosexuality, reject the relationship. Because love is love. Love can blur difficulties, existential fears.  Love can cause a profound sense of loneliness to disappear like snow in the sun.

Elio’s father (the 17-year-old main character) realizes the uniqueness of his son’s relationship with Oliver (the student who lives with them). He therefore turns this into anything but a problem and advises his son not to swallow his feelings, but to experience them. I think he expresses an essence here that is often forgotten today. Feelings are not signs of weakness, they are just signs of an intense life that is fully lived. Elio can happily praise himself with such a father, although I hope to see this attitude taken for granted by all parents now and in the future.

Herewith, I wish everyone a lot of love in his or her life. Experience it, and never let people stop you. Their hate is just a sign that they don’t know what love actually is.

Possible existence of an after death living soul and conscious robots

I don’t believe your soul lives on after you die. I think that, as I read in an article, matter is needed in which processes take place to be able to speak of a mind and the corresponding consciousness. But the possibility that robots can have just as much awareness as humans, is a difficult idea for me. It might be true, but the complex thinking and insight of people, and especially the realization of the existence in the here and now, does not seem to reconcile with this.

I think that the specific properties and the realization of consciousness ensure that recording all conceivable information about human and the processes that take place in our brain, will not be enough to imitate the mind or bring us back to life with the same complex consciousness in the form of a robot or computer. Although we never know what the future will bring.

Norwegian Wood: when you realize life isn’t always easy

Norwegian Wood is a beautiful book with lots of depth. The book tells us the story of a young man. It’s about how someone’s suicide can influence the further life of loved ones, about a lost soul mate. An important subject is the existence of people for whom life is too difficult (too much pressure, too much pain). We discover that help cannot always protect the vulnerable.

The internal struggle of the main character also controls the story. We learn that loving two women, two opposites, can be a hard battle. Especially when you want to induce your livelier side, which you can become when you choose to focus on the happy woman, but you cannot let go the other woman who “embodies” the dark side of life

In my opinion, it is a story worth reading because there are many moments where the surface is left behind and where the characters dig deeper into themselves and the difficult. You feel a strong sense of connectedness, there is despair but also hope.
